What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety can be described as feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. In itself, anxiety is a protection mechanism which makes us think again before we go into a “dangerous” situation. Often we know the source of what causes our anxiety or stress, but if we experience these feelings for a prolonged amount of time, or high level of intensity, it is possible that the anxiety can “generalise” and we find ourselves feeling anxious all the time without necessarily knowing why. If you are continually anxious, coping with the anxiety can feel like a heavy burden. Often people withdraw and find themselves doing less and less and this can be related to a form of social anxiety. Avoidance is a typical approach that people use when coping with anxiety, however it will only usually work for a while and may itself become the problem.

Anxiety Management and Anxiety Therapy

The good news is that there are some marvellous techniques for anxiety management and once you have learned them you are able to develop new strategies for coping with anxiety. My anxiety management and anxiety therapy consultations are designed to help you to understand what causes your anxiety, why your mind and body respond in the way they do and develop new responses, so that you can take full control of your anxiety management, relax and get on with enjoying life.

What Happens in An Anxiety Therapy Session?

Our first meeting gives us a chance to discuss the issues, understand what causes your anxiety (if you know) and decide on the outcomes you would like to achieve. Next I explain and demonstrate the tools and techniques used in anxiety therapy including relaxation and hypnotherapy where appropriate and will often give you a relaxation cd to use at home between appointments. Essentially there are no hard and fast rules about how many anxiety therapy consultations you will need to achieve a good level of anxiety management. You are the one who controls the process and once you feel you are coping with anxiety for yourself we need do no more – for some people who have been living with anxiety for years, this can take a while, others are ready to go it alone after just 2 or 3 sessions. My goal is to help you achieve the relief you seek in as few consultations as possible and you may surprise yourself at how quickly you find you are coping better with anxiety.
