What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). Irritable bowel syndrome commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating gas, diarrhoea and constipation.
Between 20-25% of the population report symptoms of IBS at some point in their lives. Women are more likely to present with IBS symptoms than men. Many people have symptoms but may not go to their doctor, or may not fit the criteria for diagnosis by a doctor although if you are considering hypnotherapy for the treatment of IBS, you should consult your doctor to ensure that it has been properly diagnosed and that your symptoms are not signs of a more serious condition.
In the UK Between 10% and 15% (ie. 6-9 million) are diagnosed with IBS.
Despite these uncomfortable signs and symptoms, IBS doesn't cause permanent damage to your colon. Unfortunately there is no actual cure for IBS, however the condition can be effectively managed through diet and very successfully controlled using hypnotherapy.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help Treat IBS?

There has been considerable research in this area that demonstrates hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for IBS. The most recent and comprehensive study has been completed by Dr Peter Whorewell , Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at Manchester University. Also the National Institute For Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends the use of Hypnotherapy for the treatment of IBS in prolonged and severe cases.
