Is there a cure for insomnia?
Around 1 in 3 people suffer from insomnia during their lifetime. This rises to
40-60% of the population over the age of 60 and women are twice as likely to
suffer from insomnia than men.
It is often linked to anxiety or stress and the symptoms are the inability to
fall asleep, or waking during the night or early hours of the morning and being
unable to find ways of falling asleep, leaving the sufferer exhausted the next
day.
So, how do you cure insomnia? Well the solution actually lies in the hands of
the sufferer.
How do you cure insomnia?
Although we cannot claim that hypnotherapy is a cure for insomnia, it is
certainly an excellent tool. The process of hypnosis itself is very relaxing and
even pleasurable for most and many people report that they start to sleeping
better after hypnotherapy even if that was not the reason for them seeking help
in the first place.
Sometimes it is important to realise that the insomnia itself may not be the
actual problem but a symptom of other disturbances or stresses in your life, and
the cure for insomnia is actually to address the issues such as stress or
anxiety in your life.
But this isn’t always possible of course and people may feel as if there is
nothing they can do about their job, family, relationships or other stressors in
their life, but what they can do is learn new ways to fall asleep and develop a
new attitude to waking in the night. This might be as simple as changing their
thought process from “Oh blast! I am awake again and that means I’ll be awake
all night now” to “Oh good! Here’s an opportunity to practice my relaxation
techniques!” this might sound a little far-fetched, but it can and does happen
for lots of people!
Once you start to sleep better, the issues which arise from lack of sleep start
to diminish and you find you are coping better with the normal pressures of
every day life; it starts a new virtuous circle and handling things better,
feeling less stressed and changing your attitude to sleep becomes its very own
cure for insomnia.
What can I expect to happen at a hypnotherapy session for help with lack of sleep?
The first step in any therapy plan is to understand the problem, so we will
discuss the history of your insomnia, the issues which arise from lack of sleep
and things you may already have tried as a cure for insomnia.
This is an opportunity to discuss the tools and techniques I use to help you
find ways to fall asleep and get a good night’s rest as well as looking at
lifestyle and routines.
I then guide you through some relaxation techniques using hypnotherapy is if
appropriate and often provide you with a cd to use at home, so the good work
continues even after the session.
